One has to wonder how long Doug Ford has

As we wind down 2020 and look towards the new year, it’s common to wonder what the future holds for us. Especially after this year. I mean after the disaster that was 2020, it’s nowhere to go but up right? Unless I presume you’re Doug Ford.

This week, his government is being rocked on calls of hypocrisy and elitism stemming from his Finance Minister Rod Philips’ decision to vacation in St. Barts for the Christmas holidays. In the face of a stay at home instructions from his government. I won’t get into all the angles of why this is a disastrous moment for the Ford government. If you want a pretty good analysis of why there is very little room to maneuver here, I suggest you read Scott Reid’s analysis here:

You know what would’ve been a great Christmas gift?…A Vaccine…

A quick question before you continue reading this entry. If you received a phone call this season, saying that you and your family are scheduled to receive your COVID-19 vaccine on Christmas morning, would you have drastically rescheduled your plans? Would you have cancelled opening presents with your family or Christmas Day breakfast perhaps in favour of lining up to get your shot? I know mine would.

This is all hypothetical of course. Here in Ontario vaccination centres are on a break. Because COVID-19 has to go home and isolate and see it’s family for the holidays. News is coming out that Ontario’s vaccination programs are on pause for the moment. They can’t find staff apparently to fill them due to holiday vacations.

What’s the point of Santa?

It’s Christmas Eve. Aside from their birthday, I’d argue that this is the most exciting day of the year for a child. An entire season spent building up to tonight. Waiting for the jolly old elf to squeeze down their chimney or window to lay presents for them under the Christmas tree.

As we get older, we tend to lose that excitement. Instead it’s spent stressing over the end of year tasks that need to be finished. The reports at work that need to be tabulated, or the sales targets that need to be met (especially true this year). On top of that, working hard to try and make Christmas the special time of year we all expect it to be. Getting that perfect present, and finding the best foods to prepare. We tend to put the magic of the season aside in favour of the more practical points of Christmas. The wonder and magic of Christmas is delegated to the kids. Things like Santa is just a childish notion that we’re supposed to grow out of anyways. Or should we?

It’s a Wonderful Life, is still relevant today…and that’s a problem.

Last night, I finally sat to down to watch my favourite Christmas movie. The timeless classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s themes of our common humanity and the impact one person can have on his or her friends and family, still resonate today. Maybe this year it’s more important than other years to hear that message.

However, there was one scene that stuck out to me though:

A lockdown for Christmas…

No one wanted this. I think we can all agree on that point. Friday, I posted a piece on how the Halton mayors were chiming in on their lockdown opinions. Despite a track record of being proven wrong on their COVID-19 prognostications, they couldn’t help themselves and declared Halton unique.

The word is today, that apparently the provincial government disagrees. Or at the very least has moved on from caring what the mayors are thinking. Unlike before, this statement from Halton had zero effect on provincial planning. Apparently at 1pm today (Monday), Doug Ford will announce a lockdown for all of southern Ontario, beginning Christmas Eve at 12:01am.

The Halton Mayors are at it again…

Tis the week before Christmas and all through the province, the 905 was asking…are we going into a lockdown? The Mayor of Mississauga, Bonnie Crombie has come out requesting that lockdown be extended for all red zones in the 905 to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Tom Cruise is the boss the world needs right now…

In case you missed it, another Hollywood megastar has been caught ranting to cast and crew on set. Only this time it’s completely justified.

A vaccine is here, just in time for Christmas!

In case you’ve been living under a rock or really really in self isolation, you have probably heard the great news! A vaccine for COVID-19 is here. It’s viable and effective and the plans are being formed to roll it out to the public.

We spoke about it on The 905er this week:

What the Toronto BBQ fiasco tells us about ourselves…

The in the latter half of November, it appeared that a plague of misinformation and conspiracy fuelled anti-masking may have taken root here in Canada. By now the story of the lone restauranteur who decided to defy public health guidelines because of a google search he did gained national headlines.

However, that turned out not to be the case. The restaurants on the front lines, the ones who’s livelihoods are being threatened with bankruptcy, the ones with a lot to lose due to these restrictions, didn’t flock to his support.
