In the end, we knew it all along

You can’t turn anywhere today without seeing the news of Donald Trumps subversion of American democracy. In case you somehow missed it here’s the audiotape:

This is truly nothing short of illegal. A sitting president trying to use their power and influence to change the outcome of an American election. Carl Bernstein pretty much sums it up here:

There were a few things I took away from the audio tape that stuck out to me. First, it’s apparent that Trump fully believes the conspiracy theories he espouses. For sometime, I suspected he just lied to his followers to drum up support. That they were tools for him to use to sway gullible deplorable to his flag. It’s now painfully obvious, now at the end that the president of the United States would rather believe conspiracy theories than facts.

Second, Donald Trump may not actually leave the White House after Joe Biden is inaugurated. After that recording, I think it’s safe to say that Trump is not in the end going to go quietly out the door of the White House. I think it’s a very real possibility, that one minute after Biden is sworn in as president, the marine guards at the White House will physically evict Trump from the grounds for trespassing. Personally, I’d love to see that live on TV.

What is most shocking of all though, is the lack of criticism and shaming from the Republican Party. For all their bluster and bravado, it’s clear that the modern day Republican Party is no longer an American institution. Instead it is a group of people seeking their own self aggrandisement and enrichment from the public coffers. A sitting US president is seeking to overturn the legal and prevailing voice of the people, and a major political party can’t step up to the mic?

Every Republican who is staying silent right now, ought to have their ass handed to themselves in the next election. The sad thing is they won’t. You and I both know it. Despite this election result, it is very foreseeable now that Trump and his followers will not concede. They will not go away and look inward and regroup as any other political movement in a democracy does. Instead they will constantly deny the results. Using Trump as their demigod, he’ll continue to hold rallies across the Midwest to fleece people from their hard earned money, while encouraging insurrection and violence against his perceived enemies.

We thought we were out of the woods with this election. We may in fact be going into uncharted waters in America. What do you do with a former president who does not concede the election, and has millions of fantastical followers, willing to incite violence on his behalf? The next four years will tell.
