The Conservatives have Fallen into the Liberal’s Trap

At the start of this election, it looked like the Liberals’ arrogance would prove to be their undoing. While polls had them riding high with approvals prior to the election, it appears that it wasn’t a license to go call an election. The public seemed to be willing to punish the Liberals for pulling the trigger.

Erin O’Toole and the Conservatives released their platform and it appeared that they weren’t as bad of a boogeyman as some had feared. They were suddenly a reasonable alternative. Until the Liberals decided to throw out bait to trap them.

Okay, I was wrong about the Election

I made a bold prediction last spring. At the time hype was abound that Justin Trudeau would call an election. I thought it was all bluster by the media trying to drum up a story. Check out the link and listen to the episode of The 905er.

Clearly, I my analysis wasn’t sound. Well, let me clarify, its wasn’t shared by the Trudeau government. I think it’s safe to say, no one wants this election, save for Justin Trudeau and the Liberals.

The weekend that changed Ontario

In one weekend rarely as the political landscape shifted so drastically for a government. For weeks, in Ontario, the third wave has rampaged through the population. In an effort to redeem it’s credibility the Ford government announced stricter measures to curb the spread. These included, closing of parks and playgrounds and allowing widespread carding of anyone ‘suspected’ of violating COVID-19 protocols. You could feel the a collective sigh as the majority of us came to realise this government is out of ideas.

After 20 years, its time to say goodbye

There are some who are going to read this and be honestly shocked by what I’m about to write. This week I cancelled my memberships and monthly donations to the federal and provincial Libéral parties.

I should explain myself. This isn’t due to some falling out. Or a protest of government policy. I did use to work for the party in a previous lifetime. However that has come and gone. I have found a new passion and something that I enjoy doing very much. The 905er.

Do we have what it takes to see us through this?

As I write this, the federal government’s vaccine procurement plan is on rocky ground. Behind schedule in obtaining vaccines, and trust is fading as to whether or not we’ll by sufficiently vaccinated by September is creeping into the national consciousness. Provincially, we are still grappling to get a fix on the second wave. Numbers are starting to come down but not after much hand wringing and incompetency on part of our provincial governments. On the ground, people are organising mass violations of COVID-19 policy.

At the beginning of this pandemic, comparisons were made to the need to mobilise our country on an effort comparable to the Second World War. In order to defeat this virus, we would need to manufacture and coordinate our efforts akin to how the greatest generation came together to defeat Nazism. Looking at ourselves now, I wonder if we would have the same fortitude to do so today. It seems our leaders are making bad calls all throughout every level of government. Which leads to misinformation and mistrust in guidelines put forward.

Biden is elected, and some uncomfortable truths need to be discussed in Canada

Yesterday was a great day for many Americans and fans of democracy around the world. I am of course describing the inauguration of Joe Biden as president of the United States. After four years of Trump, a return the sanity and reasonable discourse from the Oval Office is very much welcomed. There is one person though who is definitely not happy about this. Jason Kenney.

Words Matter, Actions Even More

The love affair between mainstream political parties on the right and the far right causes may finally be coming to an end. I say may be, because it has been a long standing relationship for sometime now. The attempted insurrection on Jan 6th, in Washington D.C. served as a wake up call to conservative political movements world wide. The attempt to foster a reliable base of hardcore right wing supporters seems to have backfired. This base is quickly being revealed to be comprised of conspiracy theorists, racist organizations and other ne’er do wells. Clearly the kind of company mainstream conservative political parties no longer wish to cozy up to.

An Interesting Point of View on the Matters of Free Speech and Social Media

Found this on Twitter this morning:

Definitely some interesting points to debate. I do believe that Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg of the world need to step up better. Adhere to their own guidelines that have been posted for all to participate in. Donald Trump’s take down should’ve happened years ago. His behaviour on Twitter and Facebook definitely violated their terms of service.

I hope that a lesson has been learned by both companies that trying to twist their own rules around to permit violators of their platform’s rules to stay on is a futile gesture. Only time will tell.

In the end, we knew it all along

You can’t turn anywhere today without seeing the news of Donald Trumps subversion of American democracy. In case you somehow missed it here’s the audiotape:
